This is one of the tools needed for an AR platform rifle if you plan on doing your own maintenance and building your own AR from lower receiver up. I would also add the Wheeler Engineering Roll Pin Starter Punch Set (without hammer). Then you will have all the starter punches needed to gunsmith. I have mostly Snap On tools to work on my Harley motorcycles and would prefer the same tools for gunsmithing, but Snap On does not really make gun/rifle specific tools. So, I personally have found most of the Wheeler Engineering tools with a mix of some of my Snap On tools do the trick. Wheeler Engineering tools, especially the AR-15 specific tools, are of a much higher quality then I would expect from "Made in China" products. But the Chinese also make most of the Vortex Optics and they are fantastic optics that stand right up with Aimpoint EO Tech and many other high end optics. Normally I would always buy American product as my first choice, so thumbs up to Wheeler Engineering (American Company) products (made in China).Read full review

With Wheeler as a gun tool supplier I must say that this item is very low quality. The good; the hammer is fine and the trigger guard pin tool works well. The bad; the punches are garbage. Two are bent and all of them are made of cheap metal. The quality overall is not what I expected. Look at Grace brand punches, and hammers for US made punches and hammers. Save your money and do not buy the Wheeler punch/hammer set.

I've had no issues with this kit. I've seen better quality punches and hammers, but these will suffice for working on weapons. Just remember. You don't whack roll pins you tap them in with a lot of rapid taps. A little CLP on a roll pin never hurt a fella either. The vice kit for installing Trigger Guard roll pins will prevent breaking off the ears on the lower receiver as sometimes happens if you're not careful while tapping them in with a punch and hammer. I've never done it myself, but I've seen it happen too often to ignore. The Bolt Catch Punches have a coating in them so they won't scratch your lower and are cut thinner to make olit easier to use them 9n the Bolt Catch roll pin.

Punches are incredibly soft steel, mushroomed ends on the 2nd lower to be assembled. Had to file the mushroomed parts off. The mag catch release pin punches work ok but soft as well. The trigger guard install "c clamp" works good but can be a little clunky to use. The brass/poly hammer, well it is a brass/poly hammer. Bottom line, if you are only going to be doing a couple to very few lowers this may be a good choice for you, if you are going to be doing more then assemble a set from better quality tools

I'd read some reviews online and was a little skeptical but...this is one great little tool kit. The bolt catch pin tools and the trigger guard tools alone are worth the investment, the other tools in my opinion are just a bonus they include in the box. Don't risk scratching your new stripped lower or risk breaking off a trigger guard mounting ear. BUY THESE TOOLS and do the job right. You'll be glad you did.
