When it comes to gunstock finishes Birchwood Casey Tru Oil is in a class of its own. There is simply no finer finish available at any price. Most high end, custom rifles and shotguns offer a Tru Oil finish as an expensive option, and no wonder. When properly applied Tru Oil has no rivals, it can be used to fill the grain of the wood by wet sanding it into the wood pores, or for a thousand dollar finish it can be mixed with very fine sawdust from Ebony and rubbed into the pores of the Walnut stock, when dry the stock can be wet sanded with Tru Oil and again let to dry, then a final sanding and the finish coats can be applied, I use a scant drop on my finger and then rub the finish in with the palm of my hand, after two or three coats a final sanding with 600 grit wet or dry sandpaper and a final coat of finish applied and left as is if a glossy finish is desired, or the final coat can be rubbed down with another Birchwood Casey product called Stock Sheen and Conditioner which will remove the high gloss and leave a true hand rubbed finish that simply can not be beat. As a builder of high end, custom rifles it is the only finish I will use. Highly recommended. As an aside, I recently installed a Teak tongue and groove floor in my boat, and you guessed it, I used Tru Oil as the finish for the sole of my cabin.Read full review

This is a product used mainly by makers of gunstocks and has a well deserved excellent reputation. I use it on the tool handles of vintage tools I restore. After about 3 coats it hardens to what is almost a lacquer. Won't leave fingerprints. I put over 3 or so coats of a boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits mixture. Buying it in 32 oz is the least expensive way to get it. Be careful to reseal the bottle so that it does not dry up. I put only a small hole in the paper seal and pour of what I need into a smaller bottle. Then reseal top with "cling wrap" between top and cap.

Goes on well. Provides a nice hard finish and looks great when buffed out with 0000 steel wool. I enjoy using it. It has a shelf life. So if you are not going to use it all in 3 months or so get a can of Bloxygen or it will thicken up. Once that happens you can use Japan dryer and or mineral spirits to thin it for a little while and buy a little time but ultimately it is going bad and won't dry properly and won't give the finish you want. So buy a smaller bottle if you are not going to use it up.

Purchased for a firearm restoration, but we have used this Tru-Oil for so many things around our home! Our fireplace mantle, made from poor quality pine, now shines like it is made from much better wood. The kids and I all made walking sticks this past summer and Tru-Oil was my go to for adding a durable, easy to apply finish that has kept the wood from splitting and discoloring even when exposed to rain and damp conditions. The easiest way to use is by simply putting on a pair of latex gloves and pouring a small puddle in your palm then wiping on with your hands. The product self levels so just get as even of coverage as possible and allow to dry. Apply 3 to 5 coats, lightly burnishing with 0000 steel wool between coats to remove bumps, lumps, runs or other imperfections and slightly roughen the finish. Allow to cure 24 hours or longer after the final coat, then polish to a shine with a quality furniture polish and a coarse wool rag (I have a pair of old wool socks that work great for this).
